L'histoire se déroule dans un monde futuriste.Au sein de l'Académie Seiga, un jeu en ligne est particulièrement populaire auprès des élèves : Phantasy Star Online 2, souvent abrégé en PSO2.Itsuki Tachibana, élève en seconde année dans cet établissement, n'est pas très fan de jeux vidéo et est sans doute l'un des seul à ne pas jouer à PSO2. Mais lorsqu'il est subitement nommé vice-président du conseil des étudiants, la présidente ne lui laisse pas vraiment le choix et l'incite à jouer. Il se connecte donc et découvre un monde où il peut enfin s'épanouir.
